What are the different woodturning knives?

There are many different types and shapes of woodturning knives. In our online shop you will find the typical, well-known turning knives such as bowl gouges, moulding and roughing gouges, turning chisels, parting tools, scrapers, miniature turning tools, thread chasers, turning knife handles, special turning knives and, of course, a selection of turning knife sets; special tools for face wood turning can be found under "hollowing tools".

Bowl Gouges

Bowl gouge is the tool of choice when it comes to turning bowls and plates in cross-grain. We supply them with three different bevelled edges: Either in the standard version, the short bevel or the fingernail bevel.

There is this difference between turning gouges

The standard bevelling has a 45° angle and is suitable for the simple shaping of a bowl and especially for the final cut. For bowls with a deep base, on the other hand, a bowl gouge with a short bevel is suitable.

The fingernail grind has elongated flanks with which larger quantities of wood can be removed very easily. Thanks to the 60° angle, you can also work well in deep bowls. The more aggressive fingernail grind requires a little more practice in handling, but is also quick to learn. Depending on your requirements, you are sure to find the ideal bowl tube for your project at Drechselbedarf-Schulte.de!

Woodturning gouges

In our range you will find various woodturning gouges, spindle gouges, spindle gaouges from flat steel and roughing gouges. The latter are large, solid steels with a round shape that are primarily intended for removing a lot of material. They are also used for the round turning of 4 edge blanks.
Moulding tubes are, as the name suggests, intended for shaping a workpiece. They are used to turn shapes such as round bars, sweeping curves or a canis. A spindle gouge is similar to a spindle gouge from flat steel, except that it is slightly narrower. It is particularly suitable for detailed work.

Chisel

The chisel or flat chisel is probably the most traditional woodturning tool. On the one hand, this iron is used to finish wood, i.e. to create the best possible surface. On the other hand, you can use the chisel to turn details such as small notches and pointed flutes or to prepare a recess for mounting in a chuck. However, finishing with the chisel should only be carried out in long timber.

Parting steels

As the name suggests, parting steels are suitable for parting off workpieces. Our online shop offers thicker versions, 6 mm to 10 mm, which are suitable for cutting solid wood. You will also find thinner steel cut-off blades with a steel diameter of 1.6 mm to 3 mm, which means you "waste" less wood - perfect, especially if you are working with valuable wood!

Scraper

Scrapers are made from flat steel and have an 80° bevel angle. As the name suggests, scrapers are not cutting tools, but scraping tools. However, with the right handling and a sharp cutting edge, scrapers can also produce clean cuts.
Scrapers are mainly needed to rework areas of wood where the surface is not 100% even or uniform. They are mostly used for crosscut turning. Slightly uneven curves can occur, especially on the inside of the bowl. In our online shop you will find scrapers that can help here.

Miniature tools

You will also find all the tools you need for miniature woodturning in our range. The modular woodturning sets from Robert Sorby and the woodturning knife sets from Crown for turning writing instruments and accessories are very popular.

Which woodturning knives do I need if I want to start woodturning?

As basic woodturning tools for woodturning, i.e. turning between the centres of a woodturning machine, we recommend at least the following tools: a spindle gouge from flat steel with a 19 mm blade width, a 19 mm chisel and a 6 mm chisel. This selection can be completed with a U-shaped roughing tool and a spindle gouge. In the long term, it also makes sense to purchase an oval chisel.
For bowl turning or crosscut turning, we also recommend three bowl gouges, each with a standard, short and fingernail cut. The home workshop can be rounded off with a scraper with a round and a straight cutting edge. In our shop you will find many woodturning tool sets that include these woodturning Tools.

What characterises the different turning blade steels?

Eco-Line, CRYO and Pro-Pm blades may sound like Bohemian villages to many. So here is a brief list of the knife steels and their strengths. Roughly sorted by price, you can find the following variants in the Drechselbedarf K. Schulte online shop:

  • Eco-Line: The Eco-Line steel is the cheapest steel in our woodturning tool range, but anything but "cheap". It is actually a standard HSS steel that gets its black colour from an alternative, more cost-effective final treatment. Together with the unpickled, light-coloured handle, we can offer a first-class steel at a top price.
  • HSS: Standard High Speed Steel. It has been known, proven and popular in woodworking for decades. It is a first-class steel with good sharpness and durability. It can be recognised by its shiny steel and brown stained handle.
  • CRYO: CRYO steel is cooled to -185° and this process gives it even better sharpening and durability properties. It is extremely popular with many woodturners because it offers the perfect compromise between sharpness and durability at an attractive price. The knives can be recognised by their pickled, black handle with a bright stainless steel ferrule.
  • Razor Edge: This steel is hardened to 66/69 Rockwell, giving it a unique sharpness. Woodturners who value particularly sharp knives are in the right place here. With their stained handle and copper ferrule, these woodturning knives are a real eye-catcher.
  • Pro-Pm steel: Consists of powder metallurgically sintered steel with increased tungsten and cobalt content. This ensures a particularly long service life, meaning that the steel remains sharp for a particularly long time. Wood turners who work with particularly demanding or dirty/wet woods will get their money's worth here.

Which sharpening system do I need?

All knives are delivered sharp and can be used immediately. How long a woodturning knife stays sharp depends on the blade steel and the material you are working with. A blade can remain sharp for anything from a few minutes to an hour of intensive work.
Re-sharpening is therefore essential several times per working day. We offer various sharpening systems in our shop for this purpose. For example, our own KS DML 200n with Wolverine set, the Tormek T8 or T4, the Robert Sorby Pro Edge or the WG250 wet grinder from Record Power. You will find the corresponding tools and settings for each system under the technical data in the turning knife articles.
