Scraper
Scrapers are tools that are primarily used for crosscut woodturning. They should be the tool of choice whenever you are unable to leave a clean and even surface with a tube. You can use them to rework imperfections and so-called bevel marks shortly before finishing bowls. However, you can also use one in some cases when turning face wood, for example vases and tins. Browse through our online shop to find the right scraper for your woodturning projects and order it directly to your home or workshop.

When turning bowls, dishes and plates, scrapers are used to remove any final imperfections in shape and surface quality before sanding. It is important that the tool is sharply ground and that you cut with the burr. The bevel angle should be approx. 80°.
Typical scraper shapes
Scrapers are made from flat steel and are usually round or flat
at the tip. Round scrapers are suitable for finishing the inside of
shells and round outer moulds. The flat versions, on the other
hand, are used to finish the outside of trays.
We also offer various special shapes, depending on the area of
application. You should always use these scrapers slightly
suspended and work on the centre of the spindle. In the following
list, we briefly present the typical scraper shapes:
Example of round scrapers for the inside of trays
- Crown ECO Line scraper for shell end cut, rounded on the left side
- Crown HSS scraper round
- Crown HSS scraper extra heavy left side rounded
- Hope CRYO round scraper with negative angle
Examples of straight scrapers for shell outsides
- Crown ECO Line scraper straight 19 mm
- Crown HSS scraper straight
- Crown HSS scraper extra heavy straight
- Hope CRYO square scraper with negative angle
Scraper with negative angle
The Hope scrapers with negative angles can be used parallel to the spindle, you do not have to work suspended. This makes the negative scrapers extremely safe and easy to use. The round scrapers are particularly suitable for reworking curves and the inside of bowls.
The square scrapers, on the other hand, have a slight curve radius, which also protects against snagging and helps to finish the edges. These scrapers from the Hope brand have been extremely popular for some time - and not without reason!
Scrapers for vase and jar turning
Scrapers are also very often used in face wood. For example, cans can be hollowed out relatively easily with a scraper. Our "iron cans" have been specially developed for this purpose. But the tools are also used whenever you want to finish the inside of tins and vases immaculately.
The Hope brand scrapers for tins and vases with a negative angle were specially produced for this purpose. They help to turn smaller and larger cans and vases with an even, clean wall. Thanks to the negative angle, they are less aggressive than conventional scrapers. This is a decisive safety factor, especially for deeper hollow moulds where you are working with a lot of overhang.
Sharpening instructions for scrapers
Sharpening scrapers is usually relatively simple. For all scrapers with standard moulds, you can simply attach a platform to the sharpener. The angle is set according to the bevel and the cutting edge is sharpened. Make sure that a slight burr is created on the upper edge during the process. To achieve this, the whetstone must run towards the tool.
Accordingly, the upper platform must be used on a wet grinder where the stone runs away from the tool. With such devices, it is helpful to resharpen the bevel once with a coarse diamond file to achieve a better burr. If your scrapers are ever blunt, we recommend resharpening them first with a diamond file.
