Sanding material
Sanding cloths refine the surface of your turned objects. Depending on how good your turned surface is, sand your workpiece after turning from grit 80 or 120 up to grit 1000, always depending on the wood and the previously achieved surface. Steel wool and sanding fleece are suitable for the very last sanding step. They are used from grit 1000 and can therefore be used to sand an even finer surface.
Advantages of abrasive cloth
When sanding wood, especially on a wood lathe, the backing material is crucial. Paper as a backing material can buckle, for example, damaging the sanding material and causing scratches and grooves in the surface during sanding. Paper could also tear and overheat when used on the woodturning machine. Sanding cloth is ideal for working on the woodturning machine. It moulds perfectly to the workpiece. It is suitable for working by hand or can be cut to the desired size to adhere to a Velcro surface.
Sanding on the woodturning machine
The better the final cut, the finer the grit you can start with when sanding. All unevenness in the workpiece should be removed with the first grit. For a good sanding result, the different grits should not be used in too large increments. A rough rule of thumb is that the next step is always 1.5 times as large as the previous one (80 -> 80 + 40 = 120 etc.). In long wood, you should stop the machine after each grain size and sand again by hand in the direction of the grain. Sanding is the basis for a good finish, you should definitely take your time here!
