Parting Tools

As the name suggests, the parting tool is used to cut off workpieces. More precisely, this means that it is used to completely cut through a workpiece in order to finish it, for example. This work can only be done with this particular tool. However, you can also use it for other tasks, such as turning panels or straight edges. You will find a wide selection of different parting tools in our online shop - take a look and order the right tool for your workshop!

Working with a parting-off tool

The working method differs depending on the shape of the parting-off tool. In general, however, you should always start by positioning the parting tool at an upward angle. A piece of wood should also never be cut off in one go. The cutter could then jam or overheat due to friction.

Instead, you should always start several times and, if necessary, cut wider than the actual cutter itself. Also make sure that you do not cut the workpiece all the way to the end, otherwise it will fall off the bench in an uncontrolled manner. It is better to cut it off so that it still holds securely on the bench. The best way to cut it afterwards is with a saw.

What different cut-offs are there?

There are different cut-off steels in our online shop for different applications. Below you will find a list of the most important types for beginners and professionals.

Very narrow parting steels

These are very narrow parting blades that are particularly suitable for cutting wood sparingly. They have a particularly precise cutting angle, but are not suitable for large, heavy workpieces, as the parting tool can "seize up" and generate a lot of heat. On the other hand, very narrow cutters are particularly suitable if you are working with fine woods where you want to minimise shrinkage.

Single crown/double crown parting blades

The single crowned parting-off blade has one flank, the double crowned one has two. The former variant requires a steeper cut-off angle. However, this also gives you the cleanest possible surface. With the double-flanged model, the flanks meet in the centre, so you can also use this steel parallel to the workpiece. This makes it somewhat easier to handle, but the finish is slightly less clean. When parting off, you should always start several times side by side to prevent the steel from seizing and overheating.

Diamond-shaped parting-off tool

The diamond-shaped parting-off tool also has two flanks that meet in the centre. The steel has a diamond shape in the centre, i.e. it is wider there than above and below. This ensures that the wood shavings can be removed through the cavities when parting off. This minimises the likelihood of the steel seizing or overheating.

The high-performance cutter from Blackline Tools

The Blackline cutters are high-performance tools that do not need to be resharpened. The RaZor version has an outstanding hardness and cuts all other materials that can be turned in addition to wood. Even exotic materials such as shells, resins and the like can be cut without any problems and without the tool becoming blunt.

Should you ever realise that a blade has become blunt, you can also turn the tool through 180°. The special design prevents the wood from burning and ensures a clean surface.
