Knife rests

Tool rests for the wood lathe are essential when working with wood. The hand-guided tool, such as a moulding tube, is placed on these to ensure it can be operated safely. A hand rest is included with the purchase of a woodturning machine. However, there are many other sizes and shapes that can make working on the woodturning machine easier. Browse through our range and find the right variant for your next woodturning project!

KS knife rests in different sizes

Depending on what you are working on, you will need different sized knife rests for your tools. You need smaller knife rests for miniature work and larger ones for long woodwork. We therefore offer our KS knife rests in various sizes and shapes.

For smaller machines, we recommend our Midi knife rests in lengths from 150 to 350 mm. You can also purchase the Stratos tool rests in the same lengths. These also have a 25.4 mm tang, but are slightly heavier and are more suitable for larger machines. The heaviest and most solid KS knife rests are KS Stratos XL knife rests, available in lengths of 150, 200, 250 and 400 mm. These have a 30 mm tang.

In addition to the classic straight knife rests, other types of knife rests have become established on the market. Such as rounded tool rests or those with hardened round steel.

Curved tool rests

In deeper bowls and vases, you may have to work with a very high tool protrusion in the curves of the workpiece. This makes the tool more difficult to control and a good result is increasingly difficult to achieve. For this purpose, we offer rounded knife rests so that you can always position the knife rest close to the wood, even in deep bowls.

Knife rests with hardened steel

Anyone who does a lot of woodturning will be familiar with this phenomenon: small dents appear in the edge of the knife rest, causing the tool to get stuck again and again during woodturning. Although these can be easily repaired with a little sandpaper, there is another solution to avoid them right away: Knife rests with hardened round steel!

The hardened steel minimises the risk of quirks, so your woodturning knives always glide smoothly over the tool rest. In our range you will find the very popular Jockel Mechanik tool rests with hardened round steel in 150 and 300 mm lengths, either with a 25.4 mm tang or with a 30 mm tang.

Knife rests for woodturning machines: Precision and safety when woodturning

The support for woodturning knives, also known as a tool rest or hand rest, is an indispensable component of a woodturning machine that plays a key role in precision and safety when woodturning. In woodturning, wooden workpieces are moulded on a rotating spindle to create artistic and functional objects. This support is the platform on which the cutting tool rests and with which the wood is worked.

Precision and stability

A high-quality tool rest is characterised by its stability and precision. It must be firmly mounted on the woodturning machine and must not vibrate during the woodturning process. The support surface should be smooth and well finished to allow the cutting tool to glide smoothly. The precision of the support is crucial in order to produce exact shapes and smooth surfaces.

Safety

Safety is of paramount importance when woodturning, as working with sharp cutting tools and rotating wooden workpieces can be potentially dangerous. A solid tool rest provides the turner with the necessary support to guide the cutting tool in a safe and controlled manner. It also reduces the risk of uncontrolled movements or slipping of the tool, which could lead to injury.

Flexibility and adjustability:

Different woodturning projects require different cutting angles and positions. A high-quality tool rest allows the turner to adjust the cutting tool flexibly and easily to different angles. This helps to ensure that the desired result is achieved, whether it is profiling, a face plate or rounding off edges.

Material and care:

Hand rests are often made from robust materials such as cast iron or steel, which ensure long-lasting stability and durability. It is advisable to check and maintain the rest regularly to ensure that it remains in optimum condition and functions perfectly.

Tool rests, hand rests or knife rests in a nutshell:

Overall, the tool rest is an essential accessory for woodturning lathes that ensures precision, safety and versatility when woodturning. When selecting a tool rest, it is advisable to pay attention to quality, stability, adjustability and the material used. With the right support, a woodturner can develop their creative skills and produce impressive woodwork of the highest quality.
