Special turning tools for end grain turning

If you are turning tins, vases or other deep vessels, you usually need a deeper piece of wood to hollow out. As a rule, you use a long wood blank and work into the end face. This is called end grain turning (or end grain turning).

Working into the open, face-side pores of wood requires a different technique. As you will usually be working with a lot of overhang, it is hardly possible to work with traditional tools with a bevelled edge. For this reason, special end grain / depth turning tools have been developed for this purpose. You can order these here at Drechselbedarf Schulte!

An overview of depth chisels

Over the decades, various turning tools have been developed for the end-face turning of wood. We can offer you the following tried-and-tested and sophisticated turning tools to make your work easier.

Traditional turning tools, turning hooks and ring irons

Experienced wood turners like to use the most traditional hollowing tool: the hook. In our shop you will find the very popular German-made turning hook from Wiedemann. The tool leaves a very clean surface, but requires a lot of practice to use it safely.

Crown's ring punch works in a very similar way, with a large circular cutting edge that leaves a clean finish. Both tools have a large, open cutting edge. This brings with it the risk of "snagging". Too much material can be accidentally removed, causing you to lose control of the tool when turning.

Hope turning tools with carbide and CRYO blades

Woodturner Simon Hope has developed a whole range of woodturning tools. These include turning tools for small to very large turning jobs as well as multifunctional tools that are equally suitable for small and large jobs. All are based on the use of carbide blades and CRYO cutting blades.

Both blades are closed and can be guided very easily and safely. The risk of snagging is virtually non-existent compared to hooks and ring irons. These modern turning irons are very popular and highly recommended if you don't want to use a hook specifically. In our shop you will find a large selection of Hope hollowing tools as well as many videos on the correct use of hollowing tools.

Boring tools with chip thickness limiter

As hollowing with a hook and a ring die entails the risk of snagging, various turning tool manufacturers have created a remedy. The so-called chip thickness limiters rely on cutting blades. These close the blade and ensure that you do not accidentally remove too much material and get caught in the wood. The two best-known solutions for this are the Crown Revolution Tool and the Woodcut Pro Forme System.

The Crown Revolution Tool System is available in Mini, Midi and Maxi sizes. In addition to the actual cutting blade, the SuperRing, various scraper blades can also be used for different curvatures in the wood. The Maxi set has an interchangeable handle into which you can also clamp many other woodturning knives. The Revolution Tool can also be extended to include bowl gouges or texturing tools.

The Pro-Forme deep turning tool from the Australian manufacturer Woodcut is particularly suitable for deep wet woodwork. Our range includes a solid handle and three shanks in straight, curved and strongly curved versions. There is also a chip thickness limiter on the cutting head.

Scraping boring tools

Another option for hollowing out is the use of HSS scrapers. These can simply be pressed into the wood. With a sharp cutting edge with a burr on it, you can also hollow out your workpieces cleanly in this way. We offer you the small iron box and the HSS hollowing tool from Crown.

Hollowing out with Blackline Tools

You can also hollow out with the Blackline tools from South Africa. For larger overhangs, we recommend using the blades with a negative cutting angle. These are less aggressive than conventional scrapers and can be used cleanly even with a large overhang.
