Gouges
GougesĀ are standard tools used by every wood turner. They are mainly used for long wood turning, where the workpiece is clamped between the centres of the machine. Typical tools include the roughing gouge for rough pre-turning, as well as the moulding gouge with which you can turn a wide variety of shapes. No workshop should be without the spindle moulding tube or detail tube for fine rounded shapes in wood. In our online shop you will find a large selection of different woodturning gouges. ... more...What exactly do you need woodturning tools for?
First of all, woodturning jigs (or long wood chisels) are woodturning knives that are suitable for working with long wood. The piece of wood is rotated by 90° in the lathe and clamped between the centres of the lathe or in a chuck.
The grain of the clamped workpiece is aligned from left to right. When turning, the wood fibres are therefore usually cut across or at the front. With long wood tubes, you can turn workpieces round and then shape them as desired. In this way, you can create candle holders, rungs, boxes, pens, pepper mills and much more.
What different turning gouges are available?
In our online shop you will find the most important woodturning knives for working with long wood. We have the following woodturning knives in our range for you:
Roughing gouges
Roughing" describes the rough preparation of a woodturning
blank. The right tool is needed to turn square timber or large,
unbalanced blanks round. Roughing gouges are ideal for this task
due to their very wide blade.
With the right technique, this tool can also be used to turn a
clean surface and elongated shapes. We differentiate between a flat
and a U-shaped roughing gouge.
- English U-shaped roughing gouge: particularly suitable for larger workpieces due to the deep flute, it can also be used to finish workpieces at an angle of 45° to the workpiece.
- RoughingĀ gouge in German, flat shape: forms the transition from roughing to moulding tube, is equally suitable for roughing and moulding
Spindle Gouges out of flat steel
This Spindle Gouges fro flat steelĀ is a standard tool in woodturning technology for producing simple shapes in long wood scantlings. For example, you can use it to turn gouges, canis and other simple shapes. However, other tasks can also be mastered with such a tool.
For example, you can also useĀ spindle gouges from flat steelĀ to "rough" or round a square. The roughing tool is actually intended for this, but the alternative is also suitable, especially at the beginning. You can also use such a tool to turn end faces flat and, with a little practice, hollow out the end grain. The 19 mmĀ spindle gouge from flat steelĀ made of HSS steel, for example, is one of the most widely used woodturning knives and should be a must in every woodturning workshop!
SpindleĀ gouges and detail gouges
Like the moulding tube, the spindle moulding tube is suitable for turning moulds. It has a much finer shape and is therefore mainly used for small, detailed work, but if you don't have a coarser tool to hand, you can also rough smaller scantlings with the spindle moulding tube. A popular, reasonably priced model from our range is the 13 mm spindle moulding tube made from HSS steel.
However, a detail tube is also used for particularly deep grooves and fine detail work. Thanks to the long, finger-shaped bevel, you can carry out very fine work with this tube.
Other long wood turning knives
Other woodturning knives for long wood turning include the Hope double spindle gouge, which has two bevels and is used with an interchangeable handle, or the English spindle moulding tube with Escoulen bevel. It is also possible to work with a bowl moulding tube in long wood.
Which turning gougeĀ do I need?
No woodturner can do without a single tube. If you are undecided about which tubes you need, we have a small recommendation here. These are listed in order of importance. It doesn't matter whether you choose blades made of HSS, CRYO or another steel.
- 19 mm HSS spindle gauge: This ultimate all-purpose weapon will get you through everyday woodturning. For turning moulds or cylinders, from small to large. But also ideal for roughing somewhat larger blanks.
- 30 mm HSS roughing gouge: You absolutely need this tool if you want to turn larger scantlings, branches and logs.
- 13 mm HSS moulding gouge: A very similar tool to the 19 mm moulding tube, but particularly suitable for finer work.
You can also find these 3 tools in our practical 3-piece long wood
set.
Sharpening gouges
All woodturning knives are supplied sharpened and ready for use. This means that you can start woodturning immediately after purchasing a tube. Flat roughing gouges, moulding gouges and spindle moulding gouges are all supplied with the standard KS fingernail grind. In addition, the U-shaped roughing gouge has a standard bevel and the detail gouge has its very own detail bevel. The corresponding sharpening settings for the woodturning knives can be found on the article pages.
Woodturning knives need to be sharpened regularly. Depending on how demanding your wood/material is, this may well be necessary several times an hour. This is why a sharpening system such as a woodturning machine and woodturning knives are part of every woodturner's standard inventory. You can find an overview of all our sharpening systems here. Our in-house KS DML 200N with CBN disc has been specially developed for sharpening woodturning knives.
