Clamping technology

The most common tools for clamping wood on the lathe are a chuck, face plates and the typical turning "between the centres". However, there are many other useful tools that you can use to securely fasten wood to the machine. Discover our versatile range of clamping technology in the Drechselbedarf Schulte online shop!

Clamping natural edge shells using a pin chuck

To turn a natural edge bowl, you must first clamp the blank with the outer side, i.e. the side with the tree bark. As this is usually semi-circular, you cannot clamp it securely with a face plate. Even a normal screw chuck cannot provide sufficient support here.

The so-called pin chuck was developed precisely for this work. The pin chuck is turned onto the spindle. The blank is then screwed onto the pin chuck with a previously drilled hole until it is firmly seated. These special chucks are available in various lengths and diameters in our online shop. You are sure to find the perfect model to clamp your desired natural edge bowl onto the woodturning machine.

Traditional clamping with the impact chuck

Before chucks were available on the market, impact chucks were used to clamp workpieces for "flying woodturning". Such a chuck is usually made of hard aluminium or steel. It has an inner cone into which the piece of wood is hammered with a screwed-on, conical bung. This means that it is also possible to turn on the fly on a classic drive-in chuck. In our range you will find such chucks with M33 thread in the sizes 20, 30 and 40 mm.

Other clamping technology

In addition to the clamping technology tools already mentioned, we also stock many other items in our online shop that will help you with this task. We would like to briefly present some of the most important ones here:

  • M33 travelling head for the MK 2 tailstock: This allows you to adapt a chuck to the tailstock.
  • Hager screw chuck with wood thread screw: With this screw chuck with M33 thread, you can quickly and securely mount wooden blanks on the lathe.
  • Hope clamping device for hollow vessels: This clamping device allows you to remove the base of hollow vessels. Practical for all workpieces that can no longer be held securely by face plates.
