What bevelled joints are there and what are they needed for?

Bowl gouges are made from round steel and have a milled flute. A 10/13 mm gouge, for example, has a 13 mm gouge diameter and a 10 mm wide flute. The blades are generally available with three different grinds. These can ultimately be used to realise any crosscut project such as bowls or plates. These bevels and the corresponding angle of the bevel were determined by us and are based on years of experience. The three different bevelled edges are explained below.

KS standard bevel

The KS standard bevel has a 45° bevel angle. It is particularly suitable for shaping the outside and inside and for the "final cut". This tube has particularly short flanks. Snagging is extremely unlikely with this model, which makes this tool extremely safe to use.

Difference between short, fingernail & standard sharpening explained

Short bevelling

If you are turning a bowl with a deep base, the bowl tube with short bevelling is suitable for hollowing out the deep base. Thanks to the 70° bevel, you can still work in deep bowls with a bevelled edge. The short flanks also make this tool very safe to use.

Fingernail bevel

The fingernail bevel has long, retracted flanks. These are particularly good for removing material. Coarse blanks can be pre-machined well with this tool. Thanks to the 60° angle, the tube is also suitable for deeper soils. The long flanks are also excellent for a pulling cut. This can be used to rework shell moulds.

Which bowl moulds do you need?

If you want to turn bowls, you will need the three grindings listed above. There are various sets available in our shop, each consisting of the three grinds, which you can purchase without hesitation.

  • Crown HSS Bowl Gouge Set with short blades
  • Crown ECO-Line Bowl Gouge Set
  • Crown HSS Bowl Gouge Set
  • Crown CRYO Bowl Gouge Set in wooden box

The sizes 10/13 mm and 13/16 mm are the most common. 19/22 mm tubes are only required for very large bowls, 6/9 mm are more suitable for smaller bowls, but also for the final cut. For small lathes and for turning smaller bowls, we also have short bowl tubes with a shorter overall length in our range. The different blade steels are explained below:

  • ECO-Line steel is the most favourable steel in our range. It is made from high-quality HSS steel. The unpickled handle and a different finish ensure an attractive price.
  • HSS steel is the "standard" steel with a good service life and sharpness.
  • CRYO steel ensures even greater sharpness and an even longer service life.
  • Razor Edge steel can be ground even sharper.
  • PRO-PM steel is also extremely sharp and boasts a uniquely long service life. It is therefore also suitable for working with demanding Woods.
