Adhesives

Adhesives are non-metallic substances that are able to bond materials together. This is made possible by the interaction of surface adhesion (adhesion), the force that makes a material adhere to another material, and internal strength (cohesion), the force that holds a material together. Both must be sufficient for the bond to be stable.

Adhesives can bridge fitting tolerances, fill joints, equalise different expansion coefficients of materials, seal and insulate.

What do I need wood glue for when woodturning?

Wood glue is ideal for gluing together blanks made from different types of wood to create beautiful segmented patterns when turning. Glues can also be used to repair cracks that can sometimes occur during woodturning.

Important time terms

  • Dripping time: Duration between mixing and processing
  • Flash-off time: Minimum time between application of the adhesive and bringing the parts to be joined together
  • Open time: Maximum time between application of the adhesive and joining of the parts to be joined
  • Closed time: Maximum time between bringing the parts to be joined together and pressing.
  • Setting time: Duration until hand strength
  • Pressing time: Minimum time until removal of clamps or presses
  • Curing time: Duration until curing

Further terms

  • Strength: Ability to withstand loads
  • Flexibility: Ability to remain flexible to withstand movement or vibration
  • Water resistance: ability to withstand moisture or water
  • Temperature resistance: ability to withstand extreme temperatures without losing its properties

The choice of adhesive

When selecting the adhesive, it is important to consider the type of application, how the bonded workpiece will be loaded, whether wood is being bonded to wood or wood to another material and the climate of the place of use. Will the object later be inside or outside? As we mainly offer wood glues and instant adhesives, we have listed here for which cases which of these adhesives makes sense.

Wood glue for

  • Stable, durable, load-bearing wood joints
  • Large-area workpiece joints
  • Moisture-resistant projects
  • Aesthetic projects, with clean and invisible adhesive joints

Superglue for

  • quick processing or repairs
  • Small workpieces, e.g. biros kit
  • Temporary Fixings

Application tips

Prepare the surfaces to be glued well. They should be clean, dry and free of grease to ensure optimum adhesion. The adhesive should be applied evenly to the entire surface to be bonded. The parts should be pressed together firmly during curing to avoid air pockets.
